Apprentice CFP

Creative Money is an advice-only model for financial planning and we're seeking a planner who might enjoy joining us in our non-traditional approach.

Ideally, you have done some level of financial planning prior to this, either through CFP coursework or assisting a practice. We need a detail-oriented problem solver to be a proactive team member, but you will also be trained on the Creative Money method. We would take time to train you on our systems before moving to a meeting schedule. You would need to pass the series 65 state exam if you have not already.

You'll be working virtually as you perform analyses and meet with other team members to work on cases. You will meet with clients for both virtual as well as in-person meetings when we’re all vaccinated. You must be able to relate and connect with a variety of different demographics.

Some meetings will most likely fall outside of normal business hours---a 6 pm weeknight appointment is the norm and a few Saturday mornings each month, but flexible hours otherwise as long as you’re prepared when you need to be.

Please note: This is NOT a wealth management firm and we are not looking for someone who aspires to asset management. There are similarities in terms of doing comprehensive financial planning, making specific investment recommendations, and helping clients make good money decisions, but the focus on the work is more holistic and collaborative --and not technical financial markets, and not product sales.

Also, you will not be expected to acquire your own clients; the firm acquires clients, and you will be fulfilling the service. You might be scheduled to hold a consult from time to time with a prospect.

This person will be managing nuance – of client data, of communication and evolving processes. Everybody always says, paying attention to detail is important, but more significant: does your manager need to follow up with you to see if you got all your responsibilities completed, or do you just slay it all without getting checked on? This quality is ESSENTIAL. I am looking for people who can spot the problem before I do, respond to clients and who perform their own quality assurance checks. This might be ideal for someone who likes the planning and client contact, but dislikes the idea of building your own firm or marketing.

Starting out, we need 10 hours weekly to train you on systems – we’ll pay you an hourly rate during this period. If you need to hold another job while getting up to speed and passing your CFP and series 65 (if you have not already) that is fine. Once you’re a client-facing planner, you’ll be paid a percentage of fees collected from your meetings completed. We can share with you what our other planners are doing for comparison and expectations. We can easily keep you busy part time and will be building more traffic to bring this position to full time if the planner desires that.

The ideal candidate will manage email, Slack, Help Scout, Wealthbox CRM, ScheduleOnce, Excel, Powerpoint, Dropbox and Google Drive seamlessly (we can determine if more than do-it-yourself online training needs to happen for the weirder applications). Inter-team communication will be important.

The ideal candidate be able to drive around the east-side and Seattle area to meet with clients. We also may be expanding beyond the Seattle area, so flexibility with travel would be a plus. Driving would be reimbursed at prevailing mileage reimbursement rates.

Job duties:

  • Initially support practice as an apprentice planner
  • Meet clients and make recommendations as supervised by lead planner
  • Work alongside client relationship manager in the client onboarding process
  • Proactively collect client data and communicate with clients
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and perform case review with lead planner
  • Develop presentations for client meetings based on casework
  • Meet with clients to present analysis and recommendations
  • Document recommendations before and after client meetings
  • Document suitability and other compliance needs after meetings
  • Interact and correspond with clients

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Passed or passing CFP test in 2021
  • Familiarity / comfortable prepping to pass series 65
  • Hyper detailed and organized (I don’t want to be the one spotting the problem)
  • Experience in financial planning process
  • Excellent (and responsive) communication and listening skills
  • Self-motivated and eager to drive growth at an expanding small business
  • Ability to organize and interpret data to reach sound decisions
  • Ability to discuss different aspects of a client's data
  • Ability to document existing systems and suggest refinement
  • 4-year degree from an accredited college or university

MUST HAVE -- reliable transportation. Helpful to have a computer (Microsoft) and reliable color printer, although we would buy those things for you if needed.

This is an opportunity to become part of a growing company and eventually take on more responsibility and have a contribution to company development and direction.

Candidates will be subject to rigorous civil and criminal background checks. Qualified candidates should submit a resume in PDF format attached to an email cover letter including an explanation around the difference between semimonthly and biweekly pay and why in the world I would ask you that. People who do not follow directions will not be considered. At that point, we can provide more information about our company and answer further questions about the position.

Compensation will be part-time hourly while training and then once tests are passed and we're comfortable you can handle the meetings, you'll receive a percentage of collected fees earned. Once full-time capacity is built up could easily hit $100,000 or more as we increase meeting volume for the position. This is ahead of the average 3-year income that most self-employed financial planners self-report, based on a study of independent financial planners conducted by XY Planning Network. We also offer 401k and match after 6 months and healthcare benefits for full-time planners.

Thanks for your interest!
