General Function

Leads the development, curation, and dissemination of financial planning knowledge to strengthen the academic foundations for the financial planning profession. This position serves as the leader for the department known as Knowledge for Practice (KFP) within the CFP Board’s Center for Financial Planning (Center) and is responsible and accountable for its activities and deliverables. This leadership position identifies, develops, and implements the key KFP programs/initiatives of the Center that advances the profession of financial planning. This position also provides strategic input to fundraising and selected programmatic initiatives of the Center.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop KFP programs, and initiatives that support CFP Board’s and the Center’s mission and strategic objectives.
  • Develop and lead KFP programs and initiatives that facilitates increase in the number and diversity of faculty needed to teach at CFP Board Registered Programs, 
  • Develop/enhance/maintain productive relationships with academic institutions and researchers in support of elevating financial planning as a recognized academic discipline in colleges and universities.
  • Partner with stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure KFP programs and initiatives support the CFP Board’s values and strategic goals.
  • Identifies and pursues academic research initiatives that formalizes the profession of financial planning and results in publication.

Essential Functions

  • Leads the programming and implementation of the academic conference dedicated to building and enhancing the academic foundation for the financial planning profession.  He/She is responsible for the selection and oversight of the steering committee, peer-review process, and programmatic aspects associated with the development and implementation of the event. 
  • Serve as the Executive Editor of the Center’s financial planning academic journal – currently the Financial Planning Review. He/She is responsible for direction of academic journal, including scope of research published, editorial board selection and management, oversight of editorial process, and engagement of publisher. 
  • Design, lead and implement training and education program that results in increased opportunities for faculties in financial planning courses at educational institutions.  This position is responsible for the identification and selection of educational partners (i.e., colleges and universities), including administrative engagement, negotiations, marketing oversight, faculty selection, and curricular development and implementation.   
  • Serve as active participant in development efforts for Center for Financial Planning, including internal strategic planning, concept development, and meetings, as desired, with current and potential funders. 
  • Serve and/or participate as a project team member of the CFP Board content creation activities including book and other resources that enhances and expands knowledge for practice.    This may include topic development, writing of original material, recruitment of necessary contributors, and editing of content.
  • Work in partnership Professional Practice/Certification teams to identify, cultivate and leverage academic partners for CFP Board’s Registered Program growth.
  • Work in partnership with the Research, University Relations, Professional practice on all aspects associated with the development, implementation, and delivery of research studies in support of the KFP Initiatives of the Center.
  • Work in partnership with CFP Board’s Communications and Marketing department on communications and marketing activities to promote KFP Initiatives. 
  • Serve as a productive member of the Center’s leadership team. 
  • Budget management for KFP Initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Background/Skills/Abilities Preferred 

  • Ph.D./Doctoral degree, personal financial planning, or research-based academic discipline preferred, but not required.
  • CFP® certification preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in an Association, corporate environment, or higher education institution preferred, but not required. 
  • CAE certification preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with the financial services profession and personal financial planning preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in conducting and publishing research studies desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain quality relationships and collaborate with senior-level stakeholders (internal and external) and partners.
  • Demonstrated success leading through influence, leveraging relationships delivering results in support of annual goals and priorities. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of higher education institutions.
  • Exhibits professionalism, executive presence, and corporate maturity within and beyond CFP Board.
  • Excellent communications skills: written, verbal (including public speaking and presenting), and listening. 
  • Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to handle numerous projects at any given time and deliver outstanding finished product(s) in a timely manner.
  • Ability to understand, manage and comply with annual budget requirements.
